The founders of Feather did not actually come directly to me, but instead they had a small and private design competition amongst designers who reached out to their intial recruitment post.
Normally, no designer will accept the circumstances of potentially being scammed for their work by companies initially saying they would be hired, but later backing out due to "unforseen reasons". I was aware of the stakes, but the founders seemed like decent people and passionate entrepreneurs. Most importantly, they didn't say they will pay me "with exposure," so I said why not.
I thoroughly enjoyed the founding idea of the name "Feather," but I needed to represent that in visuals.
I really wanted to emphasize the idea of the birds, because that is what the company represented: people with similar interests enjoying time together, like birds flocking together. While feathers have great visual potential, it's hard to make the connection between a feather and a meetup app.
Friends who I sent my initial designs to:
"AHHHHH, how do I make it not look like a tail?"
"Wait, why does it have to be not a tail..."
Before I officially got onto designing and coding the website, I assisted in creating some UI assets that would go on the site to showcase to users how easy their matching app was.
So whatever the UI was, it needed to be easy. One or two clicks that would solve their weekend planning problems. And we created exactly that.
It was time to create THE landing page that would bring in the initial user group for the app. I always love this step, because it meant my work was going from static 2D images to interactive work that would directly face the public. You can check out my work below:
